Prof. Dr. Michael Matthay

Prof. Dr. Michael Matthay

Professor of Medicine and Anesthesia at the University of California at San Francisco and a Senior Associate at the Cardiovascular Research Institute. He is Director of the Critical Care Medicine Training in the Department of Medicine and Associate Director of the Intensive Care Unit. Prof. Michael A. Matthay’s research program is focused on studying the pathogenesis of acute lung injury and pulmonary edema in both experimental models as well as in patients. The experimental work is focused on in vitro and in vivo studies to understand the basic mechanisms that regulate salt and water transport across the alveolar epithelium of the lung. The in vitro studies include studies of isolated alveolar epithelial type II cells from the human lung as well as from the mouse and the rat lung. The in vivo studies use pathologically and clinically relevant models of pulmonary edema, lung injury, and sepsis in mice and in either anesthetized, ventilated preparations, or also in survival studies.
