Dr. Michael H. Kuhn

Dr. Ing. Michael H. Kuhn, born on 24.April 1949, studied Electrical Engineering at the Technical University Braunschweig, Germany, specializing in Optical Fibre Communications and RF Electronics. He joined Philips Research in 1976 and worked on various subjects including speech recognition, artificial intelligence, real-time systems architecture, medical imaging and image processing. Under his leadership as a department head and managing director of one of the Corporate Research in Hamburg, Philips developed the world’s first 2T and 4T multi-nuclei MRI/MRS systems, real-time MRI and CT reconstruction, MR-Elastography and real-time image guidance for interventions, and invented Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) as a new imaging modality. From 2000 until 2002, he assumed an additional responsibility for Advanced Development and Clinical Science in the CT business unit of Philips Medical Systems in Best, the Netherlands. In 2004, Dr. Kuhn moved to Philips Healthcare, where he has held a position as a Vice President, Technology Strategy, in the global Chief Strategy & Innovation Office, until his formal retirement in 2015. This function included the responsibility for the Magnetic Particle Imaging Program including the management of the relationships to suppliers of experimental nanoparticles. In 2010, the MPI technology was licensed to Bruker Biospin GmbH, resulting in a first commercial imaging product. Dr. Kuhn has managed a number of large, multi-industry European Union-funded research consortia and has served on the EU’s Technical Panel on Health Care for the definition of its 3rd and 4th framework programme. He has served as the industry spokesperson in the US FNIH-funded public private partnership for data collection for Computer-Assisted Diagnosis (the “Imaging Database Resource Initiative”) and as an industry representative on the Steering Group for the German National Strategy Process on Medical Technology. Dr. Kuhn has also been a contributor for the EU’s Vision paper on Nanomedicine and served as the chairman of the European Technology Platform Nanomedicine for some time. Dr. Kuhn has published > 30 papers in scientific journals, > 40 papers at scientific conferences, > 20 invited papers at conferences, and has co-authored books on Speech I/O and Medical Image Segmentation and Registration. He is holder and co-holder of > 30 patents.
